Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is all around us.
Reiki is a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui. Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing from ancient teachings after many years of research and he dedicated the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki. Today Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.
There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive a Reiki treatment with the only prerequisite being a desire to be healed. Reiki can therefore be used for many conditions as it works wherever it is needed, whether the problem is physical, mental, emotional or spiritual as it will help heal the body holistically and so has the potential to help many health issues.
Experiencing a Reiki treatment
We are all individual so each person’s experience with a Reiki treatment will be different. Some people experience nothing more than feeling very relaxed during the treatment and it is only afterwards that they will experience a deeper feeling of peace and relaxation. Others feel very relaxed during the treatment but can feel intense warmth coming from the practitioner’s hands and afterwards very energised. Each individual will have their own experience of a Reiki treatment and sometimes will feel the benefit anything up to a few days later.
The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simple process. The recipient simply lies on a couch and relaxes. If they are unable to lie down the treatment can be given in a sitting position, the main thing is for the recipient to be as comfortable as possible. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. A treatment usually takes about an hour with each position held for a few minutes. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms.
